Alice Ward Walker papers, 1929-1989.

This collection includes newspaper and magazine clippings, posters, and photographs, it is arranged by type of material. The posters are clippings from newspapers or magazines that have been mounted and most likely used in her classroom. The majority of the posters are in some way music related, normally of composers, musicians, instruments, etc. Other posters include buildings, the Grand Canyon, and other places or people of interest. Her school papers include a class schedule, information on equivalency credits for salary, and memos. The programs are either shows that she attended or shows put on by her students, the one photograph included is of the cast of one of the shows.

Alice Ward Walker was a music teacher in the Newark, New Jersey public schools. Born on May 13, 1907 in New York City, she attended Erasmus Hall High School until her graduation in 1924. A graduate of Wellesley College in 1928, Alice Walker went on to receive her M.A. from the Teachers College of Columbia University in 1929. She then taught music in the public schools of Newark, New Jersey until her retirement. She retired to Darien, Connecticut, where she continued the work of her father, Claud...
